One or more pre-stretched viscose threads are impregnated while stretched in polyvinyl alcohol solution, dried while still stretched, impregnated while stretched or under tension with a second impregnating agent comprising an alkaline dispersion of a synthetic resin and a rubber in water having a total solids content of at least 20% by weight, preferably at least 25% and then dried under tension. For efficient penetration of the threads by the polyvinyl alcohol solution the threads should preferably not be coated or should have a strongly hydrophilic coating. The synthetic resin of the second impregnating agent may be a resorcinolformaldehyde resin and may be present in a concentration of at least 5% by weight. The tensile strength of the treated filaments is substantially unchanged but their breaking elongation falls. Filaments so treated are useful in the production of tyre cord.
