A composition for producing a lubricated oxalate coating on a metal surface comprises an aqueous acid oxalate coating material and dispersed therein as lubricant, from 0.10 per cent to 8 per cent weight/volume of one or more saturated straight chain fatty acids having at least 12 carbon atoms, and/or one or more glycerides of said fatty acids. The fatty acids may be stearic, myristic, lauric and palmitic acids and may be dispersed using an emulsifying or suspending agent of the polyoxeythylene ether type. The composition may be of a liquid, paint-like, or pasty consistency. Metals which may be coated are zinc, mild steel, stainless steel and corrosion resistant alloys of chromium and nickel. The coating facilitates the cold-working, e.g. drawing, rolling and stamping, of the metal. Specifications 390,834, 394,211, 661,385, 675,024 and 783,227 are referred to.
