1,027,593. Furnace charging machines. G.K.N. STEEL CO. Ltd. Jan. 17, 1963 [Jan. 24, 1962; June 22, 1962], Nos. 2670/62 and 24051/62. Heading F4B. Apparatus for charging a tiltable open hearth furnace 10 comprises a trough or shoot 23 transported between a charging station and the furnace on a lorry 63, Fig. 2 (not shown), and provided near the discharge end 36 with a shaft 72 engaging forked brackets 15 attached to the sides of each furnace opening 12 to form fulcrums about which the trough can pivot, hoisting mechanism 65 on the lorry for tilting said trough, and a detachable nose-piece 37 by which charge material is deflected over the furnace sill 14. The lifting mechanism incorporates cables 70 attached to centrally pivoted levers 68 on each side of the trough. The ends of shaft 72 carry locking lugs 76 engaging locking upper portions 21 of the forked brackets 15, and locating lugs 77 engaging the inner faces of said brackets. Each container is built up from plates to form a channel-shaped trough divided into compartments 52, 53 by an inner partition 54, is closed at one end 30, and tapers at the discharge end 36 to a width equal to that of the separate compartments. After tilting the trough, a door pivoted to the bottom of the discharge end is released by pulling a cable 51 attached to spring-loaded bolt 49, freeing the dependent portion 47 of a spindle 45 carrying catches holding the door which then swings open as the contents of compartment 52 discharge. Cable 60 is then pulled, rocking catch lever 58 to release door 56 which swings across to the dotted line position, Fig. 3, as material discharges from compartment 53. In a modification, Fig. 11 (not shown), the compartments are mutually inclined so that the outer sides are straight throughout their length up to the discharge end 36, allowing the accommodation of exceptionally long pieces of scrap metal in one of the compartments. The troughs 23 have a capacity up to twelve times greater than that of the conventional charging boxes and with several lorries in use a furnace may be charged through all the doors simultaneously.
