Said arms are driven by eccentrically mounted pins 62 at each end of a rotating shaft 60 and are secured to the carriage by flexible strips 72. Clamping bars 24, 26, and 30, 32, securing the members 20 to a support 22 and the carriage 16 are rounded at the points 40 to avoid undue stressing of the members 20 at these points. The support 22 is suspended from the machine frame by springs 80 and is raised and lowered to move the device between an inoperative position in which the fingers are clear of the table top, and an operative position in which the fingers engage the table top, by means of a pivoted lever 126 connected at one end to the support and at the other end to the armature 134 of an electromagnet, Fig. 1I (not shown). In an alternative arrangement, a bar 164 of magnetic material is secured to the upper surface of the carriage 16SP1/SP. Two reciprocating arms 68SP1/SP, eccentrically mounted on a constantly rotating shaft 60SP1/SP, are suspended by springs 162 and are connected at their forward ends by the core bar 166 of an electromagnet 168. A second electromagnet 170 is fixed to the machine frame. In operation, energization of the electromagnet 168 places the reciprocating arms 68SP1/SP in driving relationship with the carriage, while energization of the electromagnet 170 moves the carriage out of contact with the arms 68SP1/SP and holds the carriage in its inoperative position. The card is fed initially to a position beneath the carriage by co-operating rollers 11, the lower roller projecting through an aperture 10a in the table 10 and being recessed at 11a so that the rollers only feed intermittently.
