A mixture of a separatory liquid, e.g. in a magnetite suspension, and solids, e.g. raw coal, is continuously fed into a radially symmetrical chamber 14 in such a manner as to rotate about the axis of the chamber and is continuously discharged from the chamber through a plurality of tangential discharge pipes 22 each leading to a hydrocyclone in which the solids are separated into fractions. Separatory liquid and solids are tangentially fed through a pipe 1 into a vessel 2 which communicates with a reservoir 7 into which another portion of separatory liquid is fed tangentially through a pipe 6 from a vessel 4 provided with an overflow 5 for keeping the liquid level in vessel 2 constant. Tangential entry of the separatory liquid into the vessel 2 and reservoir 7 creates a rotary current which propagates down a discharge tube 12 and into the chamber 14 so that the fractions of the liquid-solids mixture removed from the chamber through the discharge pipes 22 are equal in composition and quantity with the result that the hydrocyclones are equally loaded. The chamber 14 which has frusto-conical and cylindrical side walls 15, 16 has its bottom formed by a central cone 17 which prevents the formation of a return vortex. Operating pressures and rates of flow are given.
