摘要
A process for chlorinating and/or sulphochlorinating a polymer of an olefin comprises reacting the polymer, in solution in an organic solvent, with sulphuryl chloride, contacting the resulting off-gas containing sulphur dioxide, hydrogen chloride and solvent vapour, with chlorine at a temperature below 75 DEG C. to form sulphuryl chloride, and employing the sulphuryl chloride so formed in the treatment of further polymer. The polymer may be derived from ethylene and/or propylene, butylene or hexene. In examples, carbon tetrachloride, benzene and toluene are used as solvents, and pyridine or quinoline and azodiisobutyronitrile are present as catalysts. Specifications 804,535 and 940,197 are referred to.
