A method of controlling a process for the thermal treatment of a solid material on a travelling grate comprises measuring the temperature of the gas which has passed through the material at four points, three near the discharge end of the bed and the fourth just after (in the direction of travel of the grate) the place where the curve of the gas temperature ceases to be linear, and feeding signals from these points to a controller which controls the speed of travel of the grate. The coarse control signal is derived from the point M (see the curve in the schematic Figure) and the three measurements for the fine control are taken near the discharge end of the grate and the speed of travel of the grate so adjusted that the middle reading is higher than those either side.
