948,519. Telegraphy. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct. 25, 1962 [Nov. 10, 1961], No. 40355/61. Drawings to Specification. Heading H4P. The invention provides an error-detecting telegraph system in which the data sent is stored at the transmitter in a first store comprising a number of stages so that a corresponding number of character signals can be stored. The oldest signal stored is compared at the transmitter with the oldest character signal in a second store which receives signals from the remote receiver which are identical to the signals received by the receiver. Since the oldest character signal is not cleared from the first store until it has been compared with the corresponding signal in the second store no compensation has to be made for the propagation time: the first store must be capable of storing more signals than can be transmitted during the maximum propagation period likely to be encountered. In the embodiment described signals in 5-unit start-stop code are passed to the first store which can store up to six character signals. As each signal enters the store it is stepped along to the last vacant position in the store. When signals are received from the receiver they are similarly passed to the second store which can store only two character signals. The signals in the last position in both stores are compared and, if identical, are erased so that all the stored characters can be stepped along one position prior to the next comparison. If the signals are not identical an alarm is operated, no further character signals are fed to either store, and the stores are both cleared.
