The tubular beginning of stockings and other welted articles is knitted on a four feed circular knitting-machine by circular knitting at all four feed stations simultaneously, alternate needles at the first feeding station receiving yarn and forming loops, all needles at the second station receiving yarn, alternate needles at the third station receiving yarn and the transfer sinkers simultaneously receiving thread for the formation of the welt, and at the fourth station every alternate needle receiving thread and forming stitches. The needles 1 have, alternately, a high and a low butt 1a, 1d respectively. At each feeding station is provided a rising cam 2, a knitting cam 3 and bolt cams 4, 5. At stations I III and IV cam 4 is partly withdrawn and co-operates only with the alternate needles having long butts to raise them to yarntaking height. At station II the cam 4 is fully inserted and engage all needles.
