Quenching oil composition and quenching process

A quenching oil composition comprises 0.1 to 2% of an oil-soluble N-acyl sarcosine R-CO N(CH3)CH2COOH R being saturated or unsaturated C10- 24 hydrocarbon radicle which may be hydroxy substituted, or an ester or amine salt of such sarcosine, and a mineral oil blend consisting of 50-95% of a mineral oil fraction of a viscosity 80-250 S.U.S. at 100 DEG F., a viscosity index of at least 90 and an aromatic content of at least 15%, the balance of the blend being a light mineral oil of viscosity 40-100 S.U.S. at 100 DEG F. and/or a heavy residue fraction. The salt can be derived from C10- 18 alkyl or alkylene amines or heterocyclic amines, e.g. substituted (hydroxy) imidazolines. Optional ingredients are nitrogen containing polymers, polyhydric polymers and phenols, all being exemplified. The heavy fraction can be propane precipitated bitumen or asphaltines or petroleum resins. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 834,571.
