964,648. Gyroscopic apparatus. BENDIX CORPORATION. July 10,1963 [July 11,1962], No. 27359/63. Heading G1C. A rate gyro is provided with means for testing gimbal freedom and rotor speed. As shown, the rotor 16 has eight permanent magnet rods 100 equispaced about, and parallel to, its axis so that as the rotor 16 rotates, a voltage is induced in a coil 125, whose axis is perpendicular to that of rods 100, which is proportional to the speed of the rotor. This voltage may be applied to a voltmeter, or to the Y axis of an oscilloscope, the motor excitation voltage then being applied to the X axis so that a hissajous pattern is created. To check gimbal freedom, a direct current is applied to coil 125 and this reacts with the rods 100 to produce a torque about the output axis 12-12 so that movement of the gimbal 14 may be measured by the normal pick-off 50, 52.
