As shown, the rotor 16 has eight permanent magnet rods 100 equispaced about, and parallel to, its axis so that as the rotor 16 rotates, a voltage is induced in a coil 125, whose axis is perpendicular to that of rods 100, which is proportional to the speed of the rotor. This voltage may be applied to a voltmeter, or to the Y axis of an oscilloscope, the motor excitation voltage then being applied to the X axis so that a hissajous pattern is created.
