A first liquid is continuously treated by a second immiscible liquid by passing them in parallel flow through a contact bed comprising solid, inert, fibrous material which is preferentially wetted by the first liquid, the ratio by volume of the second liquid to the first supplied to the contact bed being less than 1 and the direction of flow being governed by the relative specific gravities of the two liquids so that the two liquids flow downwardly when the specific gravity of the second liquid is higher and vice versa and removing both liquids from the contact bed as continuous phases. The process is similar to Specification 863,534.
