A teaching machine comprises a lockable case 1 and a cover plate 2, the case 1 carrying a stack of sheets 4 which are advanced one at a time by means of a hand-operated pad between a backing plate 13 and an upper plate 14 where each sheet is engaged by a feed wheel 16, which feeds each sheet past a reading area and through a passage formed by the plates 13, 14 to the underside of the machine. A cover glass 22 carries contacts which engage each sheet which is provided with holes so that the contacts 27 contact the backing plate and close a circuit thus starting a tape recorder which plays a text relating to the text which is visible in the reading area.
