A moderator structure formed of identical prismatic rods, the lateral faces of which are provided successively with a rib then a groove by means of which adjacent rods are coupled as a result of the engagement of the ribs in corresponding grooves, is characterized in that in each rod the ribs and grooves are constructed so that the distance between the longitudin 1 axis of the rod and the bottom of each groove is equal to the distance between the axis and the base of each rib. In one arrangement, Fig. 1, each rod 1 is generally cylindrical and the surface of the cylinder is cut away to form grooves 3 and ribs 4. In another arrangement, Fig. 2, each rod is of generally hexagonal cross-section with a groove 13 or a rib 14 formed in the centre of each side; raised splines 12 are provided on each side of each groove 13, and corresponding recesses are provided adjacent each rib 14. Specification 913,818 is referred to.
