A resuscitator comprises a body 10 with a passage 12 interconnecting a resilient bulb 60 and means for connecting a tube or mask 24 for connection to the patient (e.g. a newlyborn infant), the passage being connected to atmosphere through a one-way valve 30 and a pressure relief orifice. A mask 24, an endotracheal tube or a nasopharyngeal tube is connected with the passage through an adaptor received in a recess 14. The valve 30 in a cage 32 is supported by a bored plug 28 through which oxygen may be supplied. Pressure relief passages (66, 68) are formed in another plug (62) disposed in a bore 64. The bulb is alternately compressed and relaxed to force air into and withdraw air from the infant's lungs, the valve 30 closing against a seat 34 at each compression and opening when the bulb is relaxed to permit entry of a small amount of fresh air or oxygen. Surplus gas is exhausted through the pressure relief passages.
