1,021,498. Electric selective signalling; electronic counters. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Sept. 12, 1963 [Sept. 25, 1962], No. 35926/63. Headings G4A and G4H. [Also in Division H4] In an answer-back device the identification signal is generated by coded discs which are driven such that their speed ratio is m: n, m and n being mutually prime. The device includes means for sampling received signals and for short start suppression. Answer-back generator, Fig. 1.-Disc D4 is mounted on the same shaft as timing disc D1 which, through a 150: 149 reduction, drives disc D3, which provides the identification signal pulses, and D2, which provides the identification signal. This signal comprises twenty 7¢. unit signals. When toggle 4 is switched On as above and pulses from D3 and D1 coincide toggle 5 is put On, opening gate 11 so that counter 6 counts the D1 pulses. When the counter reaches 7 toggle 4 is switched Off and the counter resets whereby gate 15 switches toggle 7. The identification signal from D1, to gather with the resetting signal from counter 6 cause toggle 7 to be switched On and Off, thereby transmitting the signal. The arrangement of the notches on the wheels D1-D3 is such that the twenty characters are transmitted successively, after which a pulse via gate 12 switches toggle 5 Off so that the device is put at rest. Counter, Fig. 3.-Counter 6 is a binary gated counter which counts to seven during transmission of the identification signal and to five during reception of the combination bits of a start-stop signal. The scale is selected by a signal at 5R, and the counter automatically resets when full.
