An enlarger for producing a composite photograph in which the various text elements and/or illustrations are one by one and in succession and in correctly adjusted sizes and positions, projected on a layout from which, after each projection, they are reproduced by exposure on a photographic sensitive material, the layout being held on one side and the photographic material on the opposite side at a frame 12 pivotally mounted on a central horizontal shaft, as shown diagramatically in Fig.1. The enlarger is power operated and has as automatic focusing device for the lens 11. The elements for projection are carried on film strip 3 carried in cassette 2 and driven by reversible motor 30 past gate 6 to give longitudinal film adjustment. Transverse adjustment is made by driving the cassette on rails by means of reversible motor 42 operating through gears 40, 41, and 39 and rack 38. The cassette also rotates about a vertical axis. Beneath gate 6 is mounted on adjustable masking device 9 comprising four flexible metal strips wound on to individual spools which are reversibly rotated by separate electric motors with cam-operated limit switches to determine the range of movement. The lamphouse, cassette, and projection lens are carried on a bracket 63 displaceable vertically on uprights 65 when the action of a reversible electric motor 66 having a reduction gear. The bracket is suspended on chains 67. The lens is focused through a system of pivoted levers operated by an arm 74 which engages the curved rail 72 through roller 73. The enlarger is mounted between cupboards 83, 84 above a table 85 displaceable on rails in two mutually perpendicular directions. On table 85 is mounted a frame 93 which on one side carries the positive photographic material, and on the opposite side has the layout, the frame pivoting about a horizontal axis by means of lever 102 to present the positive material or the layout uppermost. Switches 101, 102 are actuated in each position to control the current to the projector lamp, the current being reduced by a series resistor for projection on to the layout. The duration of the exposure is controlled by timer 104 and the lens aperture is set by a solenoid diaphragm adjuster.
