Hydrogen isotopes are separated by gas chromatography in a column containing a sintered porous granular material which absorbs substantially no water, the mean diameter of the pores being 1-200m and in which palladium is deposited in the form of a sponge. Upstream of the palladium-containing granules, the gas is suitably dried by passage through a desiccant, e.g. a molecular sieve, and the flow of gas through the column, which comprises heating or cooling means, is preferably downwards. The porous sintered material is preferably alumina or sintered glass and palladium sponge is deposited in the pores by drying and reducing support material which has been impregnated with an aqueous solution of Na2PdCl4.H2O (full preparative details are supplied).
