Improvements in or relating to turret tool-posts for machine tools

A turret tool-post comprises a toothed index member 1, a rotatable external part 6 and two jointly movable arresting faces or edges 8b, 9b for locating the member 1 and spaced by at least 45 degrees with respect to the centre of the member. The faces 8b, 9b are on locking members 8, 9 recessed, Fig. 5 (not shown), to receive reduced sections of a shaft 13 which cam the members against the member 1 when the shaft 13 is turned by a handle 14. This causes the opposite tooth la or the adjacent teeth 1b 1c to bear against the turret 6, depending on whether the turret is recessed adjacent tooth 1a. A spring 11 withdraws the members 8, 9 when the shaft is returned. The member 1 is fixed by screws 2, and the turret 6 is clamped, after indexing, by a nut on a central bolt 5, permitting it to be fixed in positions between those located by the members 8, 9. In a modification, Fig. 7, the index-teeth 26 are formed in the rotatable turret 25, the locking shaft 29 bearing in a stationary post 21 and having bevelled ends 29a, 29b which may be extended into engagement with the index teeth or withdrawn into the post by rotation of the shaft.
