A separator for grading minerals in heavy liquids has a rotating paddle-drum 1 inside which at least two distinct adjacent separator compartments 16 and 17 are disposed, delivery openings 18 and 19 for the sinking fractions extending in opposite directions and means for discharging the sinking fractions into separate sections 31 and 32 of the drum. The drum is sealed at its ends against fixed walls 9 and 10 by packings 11 and 12 and a partition 8 is sealed against a partition 20 at 21 to divide the drum into the sections 31 and 32. The partition 20 joins the walls 13, 15 which with the wall 14 form the compartments 16 and 17. Shoots 23 and 24 feed the compartments which contain heavy liquids of different densities and which are run off at different levels 25 and 26 so that the pressure on both sides of the packing 21 is the same. Raw material enters compartment 16 by shoot 23 whence the "floats" are removed at the run-off 25 by a paddle 27 whilst the "sinks" pass through the opening 18 into the paddle sections 31 which lift them to the shoot 24. Shoot 24 feeds compartment 17 whence the "floats" are removed at run-off 26 by a paddle 28 whilst the "sinks" pass through the outlet 19 to the paddle sections 32 which lift them into a shoot 29 leading out of the separator. The drum 1 has flanged edges 2 which support it on rollers 3 and is rotated by a gear 4 driven at 6.
