989,971. Bowling alleys. BRUNSWICK CORPORATION. Aug. 14, 1962 [Aug. 14, 1961], No. 31099/62. Heading A6D. A device for incorporation in a bowling alley installation to indicate a strike, comprises a switch in circuit with an indicator and mounted in the pinsetter control mechanism so as to be closed only when the pinsetter is operated after a strike has been bowled, and not when it operates after the second ball of a frame has been bowled. As particularly described, the device is incorporated in the pinsetter control mechanism disclosed in Specification 870,039, said control mechanism comprising firstly, a cam 17 which is arranged to rotate once each time a ball is rolled down the alley; secondly a lever 25 keyed to a rotatable shaft 26 and spring- urged to move towards the cam 17 but prevented from doing so by a latch except when the second ball of the frame is bowled; and thirdly a lever 13 and cam follower 15 normally prevented from co-operating with the cam 17 by a latch 21, 22 (not shown), said latch being released to permit such co-operation when the pinsetter mechanism is required to position a new set of pins on the playing deck, either after a strike, or after the second ball of the frame. Such co-operation results in the cam follower 15 dropping on to the lower region 20 of the cam 17, with the resultant pivoting of the lever 13. The strike indicating device comprises a mercury switch 39 mounted on a bracket 36 pivoted to the frame of the pinsetter control mechanism at 37, and restrained to move in coordination with the lever 13 by a pin 42 mounted on the said lever. Thus as the lever 13 drops to its pinsetting position, the bracket 36 drops to the position indicated in broken lines in Fig. 3 to allow the switch 39 to complete the circuit to the strike indicator. In order to prevent the switch from operating after the second ball of a frame has been bowled, a lever 43 is provided on the shaft 26, so that as the latter rotates after the said second ball has been bowled, the lever moves an arm 45 pivoted at 46 to prevent the switch 39 from dropping to its lowermost, operative position.
