A holding furnace 10 releasably mounted in bearings 16 and 17 on a tiltable frame 12 is heated by an induction unit 18 in a melting trough 19 on the furnace periphery, the furnace being rotatable by a motor 14 and gearing 15 so that the heating unit may be rotated above the surface of the melt 21 without the melt running out of the charging hole 20 and independently of the pouring action. The furnace is tilted by the piston arrangement 11 and with the heating unit mounted near the tap hole 13 only the metal in the melting trough is discharged immediately leading to economy in the current required to preserve the correct pouring temperature. Several heating units may be located obliquely behind the first and staggered in relation to each other to rise successively over the surface of the melt.
