A fluidized bed separator comprises a bed 2 of porous material with an outlet 9 for the heavy fraction and a weir 141 over which flows the light fraction, gas being introduced from below the porous bed. Apart from the use of a porous bed, the apparatus is as described in Specifications 970,643, 970,644, 971,583 and 992,984, but is provided additionally with a drain 221, Figs. 3 and 4, at the base of the upper fluidized bed. The drain enables the bed to be cleared as may become necessary in the event of spontaneous ignition. The drain 221 runs into the feed pipe 134 which normally delivers the overflow to the lower bed 2 which is a bed of magnetite, galena, or ferrosilicon. The drain is closed by a sliding shutter 225 driven by worm 228. The drain may comprise a separate conduit containing a valve, Fig. 2 (not shown).
