Compressible articles, e.g. stacks of egg trays 29, are fed from a platform 28 of a machine frame 10 on to a transfer plate 30 when in its raised position 34, and rest against a stop plate 52 also in its raised position, the transfer plate and stop plate 52 are then lowered by pneumatic cylinders 32, 58 to the position shown, and the trays compressed against the top plate 52 by a pusher plate 26 actuated by a first cylinder 14. The pusher plate is then retracted, the stop plate 52 raised and the pusher plate advanced by a second cylinder 18 to push the trays into a bag 30 held open by distending members 40, The upper member being operated by a cylinder 48. The first cylinder 14 has a piston-rod 16 to which the second cylinder 18 is attached, the second cylinder having sleeve 20 slidable on rods 22 attached to the frame 10, and the pusher plate 26 is fixed to the piston-rod 24 of the first cylinder 18. All the cylinders in the machine are double acting and are coupled to a control system, not shown.
