In the event of overwind of a mine cage which is connected to the winding rope by a coupling device as described in Specification 892,108, the sleeve 1 of the coupling device which is secured to the mine cage is supported, on detachment from the part connected to the winding rope, by latch members 5, 6 which are slidably mounted on rods 3, 4 supported on a plate P secured to the superstructure. The latch members 5, 6 are urged towards each other by springs 7 and have chamfered lower faces 10. In operation, the sleeve 1 passes through an aperture in the plate P and between the latch members which are forced apart against the action of the springs 7. When the winding rope is detached the cage and sleeve 1 fall back until the sleeve engages and is supported by the latch members 5, 6. The latch members are forced apart to release the sleeve 1 by rotating cams 9, which are mounted on sleeves 8 on the rods 3, 4, by means of nuts 14.
