A hydrogen thyratron switch comprises a cathode 9, a priming electrode 8, a heat shield 6 having an aperture 7, a first baffle 4 having an aperture 5, a second baffle 1 having an aperture 3 and an anode 1, the apertures 5, 7 being aligned with electrode 8 whilst aperture 3 is out of alignment with apertures 5, 7, the arrangement being such that, in operation, the anode field cannot penetrate to any great extent through the first baffle 4 in the direction of the priming electrode 8. The apertured baffles are preferably in the form of apertured diaphragms extending across and mechanically and electrically united with an enclosing pot-like structure 11, and the heat shield is a tubular structure completely enclosing (except for the aperture 7) the cathode 9 and priming electrode 8. In operation, a signal is applied at 12 directly to the baffles 2, 4 and through a differentiating network 13, 14 to priming electrode 8.
