A detergent composition contains an N-hydroxyalkyl-N-methyltaurine-N-oxide of the formula FORM:1009190/C4-C5/1 wherein R represents a C8- 18 alkyl group and M is hydrogen or an alkali metal, particularly sodiums together with conventional builders such as tetrapotassium pyrophosphate and alkali metal suphates, carbonates, silicates and borates; a carboxymethyl cellulose soil suspending agent and other synthetic detergents, soaps, perfumes, abrasives, foam stabilizers, germicidal agents and colouring agents. The composition may be in the form of dish-washing detergents, non-soap bars, soap bars, bars containing mixtures of soaps and non-soaps, and shampoos.
