A non-reciprocal differential phase-shifter comprises a non-circular waveguide having minor symmetry about two orthogonal axes, e.g. square or cruciform (as shown), and ferrite elements 46-49, arranged as shown, which produce zero differential phase-shift for one direction of propagation between orthogonally resolved wave components 44, 45 and 180 degrees differential phase shift for the other direction of propagation. When used as a circulator, each end of the guide is connected to a hybrid junction providing E and H-arm ports at either end. The junctions are orientated in such a manner that a wave applied to the input H-plane or E-plane port may be resolved into components 44, 45 having equal amplitude. Such a wave, after propagation through the phase-shifter, recombines to provide an output at either an E- or H-plane output junction. Since the phase shift is non-reciprocal, the device behaves as a 4-port circulator. One of the hybrid junctions may be replaced by an aerial, a transmitter and a receiver being connected to the remaining E- and H-plane ports. The device operates in the same manner as a conventional ferrite TR system.
