1,074,387. Aircraft.BOEING CO. Aug. 28, 1964 [Aug. 29, 1963], No. 35431/64. Headings B7G and B7W. An aeroplane is provided with at least one engine pivotally mounted on the fuselage so that it may be moved between a position above the plane of the wings to permit the use of a shorter undercarriage and prevent ingestion of foreign matter on take-off and landing, and a position below the plane of the wings, for cruise, in which, for example, it is in a relatively high pressure region. The aircraft described is a variable geometry supersonic aircraft having two turbo-jet engines 15a, 16a mounted on pylons 18a, 19a pivotable by an hydraulic jack (21, Fig. 9, not shown) about an axis (20) which may be parallel to the longitudinal axis of the aircraft (Fig. 2, not shown) or inclined rearwardly (Fig. 5, not shown) so that the engine incidence is reduced for take-off and landing in the raised position. A further fixed engine (17, Fig. 1, not shown) may be mounted at the tail. The engines have power off-take shafting including a bevel gear coaxial with the pivot axis (Fig. 7, not shown). The invention may be applied to a twin boom aircraft having a single engine between the booms, and the engines may alternatively be ram jets.
