Brush bristles of synthetic monofilaments are treated to resemble natural bristles by dyeing to produce a dark peripheral zone and a central core of lighter colour and rounding, tapering or flagging the tips of the filaments to remove the zone and expose the ends of the cores. The filaments may be dyed in the mass before spinning or the spun filament may be subsequently dyed. In treating nylon filaments to give them the appearance of wild boar bristles for use in hair brushes, the filaments are immersed successively in dye baths of haematin and sodium bichromate, respectively containing acetic acid and sodium alkylsulphonate. The black tips of the filaments are ground to produce rounded ends and to expose the yellow central cores. Filaments of polycaprolactam may be dyed using the same baths and blended with shaving brush bristles. Corrugated filaments of polyethylene teryphthalate may be spun dyed with a ferro yellow pigment and dyed black superficially for use as a clothes brush. Polyamides such as hexamethylene sebacamide polyurethane, polyolefins or polyvinyl compounds and viscose rayon may be used as monofilaments.
