In a parametric amplifier having a D.C- pumped amplifier structure and an axia magnetic field, the direction of the magnetic field is reversed between the input coupler and the amplifying structure and again between the amplifying structure and the output coupler so that in operation a fast cyclotron wave is coupled on the beam by the input signal and is converted to a synchronous wave which is amplified in the amplifying structure, the resulting synchronous wave being reconverted to a fast cyclotron wave which delivers an output to the output coupler.
