A method for the production of warmth insulating ends, organic the form of bodies having a cellular structure on the basis of isocyanate - polyaddition reactions
A heat-insulating intumescent cellular material is prepared by admixing (a) at least one precursor of an aminoplast resinous condensation product containing N-methylol groups, (b) an organic polyisocyanate or polyisothiocyanate or a mixture thereof, (c) an organic compound other than a product under (a) containing a plurality of groups containing reactive hydrogen atoms, including at least one OH group, (d) a cellular-structure-producing amount of water and/or a carboxylic acid and (e) at least one intumescing agent. The intumescent agent may be NH4Cl, NH4Br or ortho-, meta- or pyro-phosphoric acid or an NH4, amine or salt-forming amide salt thereof. The aminoplast precursor may be dimethylol urea or a water or organic solvent soluble condensation product of dimethylol urea, alone or with a polymethylol melamine. It may be prepared in situ from the base(s) and formaldehyde. The isocyanate reactant may be monomeric or polymeric. The OH compound (c) may be monomeric, a low polymer, e.g. polyethyleneglycol, paraformaldehyde, or a polyester, polyesteramide or polyether having terminal OH groups and may be substituted, e.g. by amino or thiol. Part of the OH compound may be replaced by a polyamine. An amino or amide catalyst may be present. The reaction mixture also preferably includes at least one saccharide, preferably a polysaccharide, a polyol having at least 4 OH groups, or an aminopolyol having a total of at least 4 amino plus OH groups, and may also contain a phenolic novolak or resole.
