The deflection magnifying mesh screen 5 of a cathode-ray tube is composed of a metallic mesh 5a with an insulating layer 5b on its side facing the gun in order to reduce secondary emission. In addition, the screen is held at a potential lower than that of the first anode 6 and well below that of the final anode 7. The screen may be made by moulding a glass plate or by cutting it by a scanning electron beam and then depositing the metal by evaporation.
