An indexing mechanism for a turntable comprises a linear actuator having a movable carriage, a lever pivotally mounted upon the carriage for rotation about an axis normal to the direction of movement of the carriage and a driving pin slidably mounted on the lever for movement parallel to the said axis. An air cylinder 5, Figs. 1 and 2, is arranged to operate a piston 4 in a line tangential to a circle of a series of indexing sockets 2, 3, Fig. 2, carried on a turntable 1. A carriage 6 is moved along the direction of the above line by the piston 4 and slides on guides 7, 8, Fig. 1. A lever arrangement 9 pivots about a pin 10 secured to the carriage and has one end with a pin 13 moving in an arcuate slot 14 and the other end carrying a pin 12 which can be moved upwards by an air cylinder 17, Fig. 2, to engage an index socket in the turntable. A pneumatically operated layout is described to give automatic sequential operation of the parts including a locking pin 20 which holds the turntable in the indexed position while the pin 12 and lever is moved to the next index socket. Pneumatic buffers 16 cushion the movement of the carriage.
