An emulsifiable lubricating oil composition comprises a major proportion of a mineral lubricating oil a minor proportion of a primary emulsifier which is a condensation product of an alkylene oxide and an organic compound having at least one active hydrogen atom in the molecule for condensation and minor proportions each of an amino-alcohol, an aliphatic diamine and an aliphatic carboxylic acid. Alkylene oxides specified are ethylene and propylene oxide. Condensable compounds specified are aliphatic alcohols, e.g. oleyl alcohol, branched or straight chain alkyl phenols, e.g. iso-octyl phenol, primary or secondary aliphatic amines, e.g. dioctyl, dodecyl or hexadecyl amine, and saturated or unsaturated aliphatic carboxylic acids, e.g. oleic acid. Amino-alcohols specified are mono, di, and triethanolamine, monoethanol-methyl, ethyl, propyl and dibutyl-amine, diethanol butylamine and the corresponding propanol, iso-propanol and mixed iso-propanol amines. Aliphatic diamines specified are those of formula R-NH-(CH2)n-NH2 where R is a C10-C18 aliphatic chain. The aliphatic carboxylic acid may be saturated or unsaturated, e.g. undecylenic acid or oleic acid. The composition may also include meta-cresol, lower alcohols, and partial esters of polyhydric alcohols.
