Magnesium base alloys comprise magnesium and sufficient Me (Ti, Mn, V, Cr, Zr or Hf) and Si to form a phase of the form Me5Si3 with the optional addition of 0.3-10% Zn and conventional amounts of Ag, Al or Cd. Me is present in the range 0.0001-3% and Si in the range 0.01-0.5%.
