1,013,266. Measuring rotary unbalance. W. & T. AVERY Ltd. Sept. 12, 1962 [Sept. 21, 1961], No. 34778/62. Heading G1N. In a device for measuring the unbalance of rotary bodies, transducers are mounted on members situated at the rotor journals supporting the rotor and rotating with it, the members transmitting the forces at the bearings to the transducers. Support 5-8, which carry load cells 11-14 disposed against the rotar journal 9, are mounted on a carrier 4 and a spindle 3, which is rotatably supported on stand 1. The load cells thus give constant outputs indicative of the magnitude and angular position of unbalance without the use of phase sensitive devices. In a modification brackets carrying strain gauges bear against the rotor journal at two axially spaced planes so that unbalance of rotors having flexible shafts may be measured. Fig. 3 shows an automatic balancing arrangement in which the axis of rotation of the rotor is automatically adjusted by motor 32 through screw 33. A counter-balance weight on the end of the screw moves in the opposite direction to support 31. A circuit for use with this arrangement is described (Fig. 5 not shown). The load cells 12,14 are each connected in series with the input of a separate bridge circuit, the bridge outputs being differentially connected and the resultant output being applied to one winding of motor 32. The other motor winding is fed from the same source as the bridge circuits. In a modified automatic balancing arrangement (Fig. 4, not shown) a ring member is clamped to the rotor journal and carries two masses adjustable in directions at right angles to each other by individual motors to vary the centre of gravity of the rotor. Load cells carried by an outer ring bear against the ring member, the outer ring being rotatably mounted on the test stand to rotate with the rotor.
