In a double sash sliding window wherein the stiles 14 of each sash slidably engage in channels 7, in jambs 3 of an outer frame and secured by a foot 10 to the twist bar 8 of a balance device, the sash and frame being constructed of extruded aluminium &c. section members secured together by self-tapping screws 4, 16, received in channels 5, 17 on the section rail members, the inner faces of the stiles are fitted with removable blocks 20 which co-act with the inner edges of the flanges of the channel 7, so that by removing the blocks 20 the sashes can be slid laterally into one jamb channel and then removed therefrom after detaching the foot 10 which remains in the position in which it was detached from the sash. An interlock so provided in the closed positions of the sashes between the meeting rails of the sashes and weather excluders 23, are provided between the movable sashes and frame jambs, head and sill members. The lower rail of the lower sash is fitted with a finger manipulation bar 30 and the lower rail of the upper sash has a handle 31 on the outside, and the upper rail of the upper sash has a finger groove 32 on the inside. The external surface of the window frame has flanges for accommodating an insect screen or an additional glazed panel.
