A device for feeding stacks 1, 3 and 1, 4 of books or the like to the cutting station of an automatic three-cutter machine by means of a conveyer belt 2 comprises a feed stop 3 and a feed carriage 6 with a gripping device 7 and an engaging member 8, actuated once for each revolution of the driving shaft of the machine. The carriage is actuated by means of crank 10, lever 11 and tie-rod 12 and the device 7 by means of cam disc 13, spring-influenced cam roller 14, lever 15, tie-rod 16, connecting rod 17, levers 18, rail 19 and a ram 20 having a roller 21. Transfer by the device 7 takes place only when a limit switch a connected to stop 3 is depressed by a stack. When the switch is not depressed, a magnet b is energized to cause cam roller 14, carried by one end d of a pivotally-mounted lever c secured to lever 15, to swing down and away from cam disc 13 and lever 15 is then supported against a stop so that the carriage 6 has an idle stroke.
