The invention comprises a compound of general formula R.N3, in which R represents a radical of formula C6F4X, where X is a group or atom inert to a nitrosyl-producing compound, for example a hydrogen, fluorine, chlorine, bromine or iodine atom or a hydroxy, alkoxy, alkyl, aryl, fluorinated alkyl, fluorinated aryl or nitro radical. The compound may be made by reacting a hydrazine of formula R.NH.NH2, with a compound capable of giving rise to a nitrosyl ion, for example nitrous acid (which may be generated by the action of a nonoxidizing mineral acid on a nitrite) preferably at a temperature not exceeding 10 DEG C., or a nitrosyl halide, or dinitrogen tetroxide. The products are useful intermediates. Thus 2-phenyltetrafluorophenyl azide is converted to tetrafluorocarbazole by U.V. light irradiation; 2 - isopropyl - tetrafluorophenyl azide is converted by U.V. light to 4,5,6,7-tetrafluoro-2,3-dihydro - 3 - methyl - indole which can be oxidized to 4,5,6,7-tetra-3-methyl indole; pentafluorophenyl azide is heated with acetylene in acetone to form 1-pentafluorophenyl triazole; pentafluorophenyl azide reacts with quinone under U.V. irradiation to form N-pentafluorophenylcycloiminobenzoquinone.
