Molten ferrous metal is tapped into a ladle where it is treated with a refining agent 60% to 100% by weight of which consists of one or more of polytetrafluorethylene, iron chloride, manganese chloride, nickel chloride and chromium chloride, the balance of the composition if any being sodium chloride and/or calcium chloride. The agent is added in small quantities contained in reaction vessels which are immersed to the bottom of the ladle.
