[Also in Division G1] An apparatus for continuously detecting and indicating and/or recording the wear of overhead trolley wires 7 comprises a carriage 10 provided with at least one wear detector 8 adapted to run along a longitudinal area of the wire subjected to wear and at least one wireengaging element adapted to run along a longitudinal area not subjected to wear, while means are provided for indicating and/or recording at every moment the change in the relative position of the elements which gives a measurement of the wear of the wire. In the embodiment illustrated two grooved rollers 5 are mounted on the carriage and a convex roller 8 detects the wear of the wire. The roller 8 is mounted on a pivoted arm 13 the movement of which is transmitted to a piston 15 which is urged downwardly by a spring 17. The movements of the piston are transmitted hydraulically or otherwise to the receiving means housed in the vehicle 19, i.e. an indicator dial 20 and a tape recorder 21.
