Improvements in slag screens for slag tap furnaces of steam boilers

A slag screen in a slag tap furnace of a steam boiler separating the combustion chamber 1, Fig. 1 (not shown), having a slag outlet 3, top stage burners 11 and bottom stage burners 21 from the radiation chamber 2, comprises grids of deflector partitions 4 and straightener partitions 5, formed by tube platens enclosed in a tamping compound, extending, disposed side by side and widening from the furnace partition 12 to the walls 32, 22. The straightener partitions are arranged in vertical planes with their tubes 14, Fig. 8, inclined to the horizontal at a shallower angle than those of the deflector partitions which are arranged vertically at partition 12 and then twist forming an increasing angle α, Fig. 5, with the vertical as they approach wall 32, partitions about the centre line turning in opposite directions. To improve separation, the deflector partitions 4 form an angle #, Fig. 2, and the straightener partitions 5 an angle E with normal sectional planes, the two sets of partitions are also offset a distance V and the distance between them d, is small. In modifications there may be two deflector grids inclined in opposite directions to the vertical plane or a plurality of deflector and straightener grids disposed successively in pairs.
