In a process of grain refining an alloy steel, a carbon steel or a cast iron, 0.1%-0.4% by weight of the following flux composition is added to the molten metal. Flux composition by weight:- .Fe3O4.17-27% .CaO.17-27% .SiO2.12-23% .MgO.7-17% .Al2O3.7-17% .Na2O &/H/.0.5-5% .K2O.0.5-5% The flux may also contain up to 10% FeO and up to 5% MnO and it may be added as a powder to the ladle just before teeming or injected into the stream of metal during casting.
