1,101,293. Ion sources. UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION. 17 Jan., 1966 [28 July, 1965], No. 2040/66. Heading HID. A duoplasmatron ion source comprising cathode filament 9, intermediate electrode 10, anode 2 and extractor electrode 5 has the anode provided with a " plasma expansion cup " 1 which is surrounded by a magnetic coil 6. A magnetic coil 8 may be provided to surround the cathode chamber and a focusing coil 7 is provided below the extractor electrode 5. The coils 6, 7 are so energized in bucking relationship that the magnetic field is nearly zero at the exit end of the plasma expansion cup. Three pairs of fins 3, 4 equally spaced around the space between the cup 1 and the electrode 5 eliminate discharges resulting from oscillating electrodes. Gas, e.g. hydrogen, is fed via tube 16 to the region between electrodes 10 and 2. The intermediate and anodes electrodes 10, 2 are provided with cooling pipes 11, 12. The anode 2 is of copper and the intermediate electrode 10 may be of magnetic material or, if the coil 8 is not used, of non-magnetic material, e.g. copper. The intermediate electrode 10 may be unitary with a heat transferring member 17. Suitable dimensions and operating data are given.
