992,036. Rectifying. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. April 10, 1962 [April 13, 1961], No. 13765/62. Heading H2F. [Also in Division H3] A rectifying arrangement of the type comprising a series combination of a symmetrical non-linear resistance 7 (which may have a characteristic of the form V = c.I#, where c and # are constants) and a capacitor 8 which is preferably of low A.C. impedance relative to the non- linear resistance, is supplied with a symmetrical alternating voltage and a direct bias voltage. The direct bias voltage may be derived through a rectifier 2 from a higher voltage tapping on the transformer 1 which provides the alternating supply and through a smoothing circuit comprising inductance 3 and capacitors 4 and 5 and through a resistance 9. The output may be taken across the capacitor 8 and part of the resistor 9. The Specification discusses the operation of the circuit with particular values of the components and the currents and voltages. The output voltage may be arranged to rise, remain constant or fall with increase of circuit voltage. The invention may be used in the line deflection circuit of a television receiver (Fig. 5, not shown; see Division H3). The non-linear resistor need not be voltage dependent, and could be a resistor with a high negative temperature coefficient, provided that the frequency of operation is sufficiently low.
