Lignocellulosic material is brominated in a two-stage process involving first impregnating with one or more reactants under non or partial-brominating conditions and then impregnating with further reactant(s), or adjusting the conditions, to effect complete bromination. The material may be subsequently treated with a known flame-proofing agent, e.g. a borate. The reactants may include a bromide (or bromine which forms bromide by partial bromination), an oxidizing agent, and an acid. When all the reactants are employed in the first stage, reaction may be effected by application of heat or pressure or change of humidity. Impregnation may be by a reduced pressure technique. Bromination may be followed by a neutralization step to remove remaining acid. The lignocellulosic material may be in the form of wood, pulp, paper, straw or chip board, fabric, rope or belting.
