Adhesive compositions for composite wood materials comprise the wood protection agents of the parent Specification (ammonium fluoroborates obtained by reacting 1 mole of the bifluoride of ammonia or an amine or quaternary ammonium base with 2 moles boric acid in the presence of water and optionally excess nitrogen base) in admixture with a glue. Specified glues are aqueous urea-formaldehyde resin solution, melamine-formaldehyde resins and mixtures thereof. In the example such an adhesive is used to make chip-board.ALSO:In an example an ammonium fluoroborate having a B : F ratio of about 1 : 1 as claimed in the parent Specification is prepared by adding 6 mol. hydrofluoric acid to a mixture of 6 mol. boric acid and 3 mol. ethanolamine.
