979,747. Producing nuclear fuel elements; rolling. UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION. Sept. 11, 1963 [Oct. 11, 1962], No. 35787/63. Headings B3A and B3M. [Also in Division G6] A process of joining a ferrous metal, such as stainless steel or low carbon steel, to a core of uranium, zirconium, uranium base alloy, or zirconium base alloy, for making a nuclear fuel element, for example, comprises superimposing molybdenum foil on the surfaces of the core to be joined, placing plates of ferrous metal on to the foil, encasing the assembly in an evacuated container, heating the assembly to between 600‹ and 1000‹ C., and preferably between 600‹ and 660‹ C., rapidly forging the assembly to reduce its thickness by 50%, bringing the assembly again to between 600‹ and 1000‹ C. for 2 hours and cross-rolling until its thickness is about 20% of its original thickness, maintaining the temperature for a further hour, cooling the assembly, and removing it from its container. Examples of a zircaloy-2-stainless steel sandwich and a uranium-stainless steel sandwich are given.
