A record card or tape is impervious to light along the recording tracks except at the bit positions, and information is recorded by covering selected bit positions with an opaque material. Recording may be by means of stamps, brushes or nozzles and may be effected while the record is moving. Such a record may be sensed photo-electrically in a conventional manner, light passing through those bit positions which have not been covered. The covering material may be made conductive, magnetic, light reflective or fluorescent, and this additional property may be utilized in conjunction with appropriate sensing apparatus to provide signals which are complementary to those produced by the sensing of the transparent bit positions, e.g. for checking purposes. Alternatively, where at least one bit position per column or row is covered, the width of covering material deposited may be varied to record further information, e.g. in Morse code, which is retrievable by a set of sensing devices connected in parallel.
